A cluttered desk is rarely a storage problem. It is a no-fixed-place problem. Pens end up in three different mugs, the phone lies face down on the notes you need, and every clip and eraser drifts to the edge. Give each of those things one home, and most of the mess stops coming back.
This is the five-minute reset we use.
1. Clear everything off (1 minute)
Take it all off the table, not just the obvious clutter, and wipe the surface. Then put back only what you use on most days. Everything else goes in a drawer, or goes.
2. Give pens one home (1 minute)
One holder, within reach of the hand you write with. The Colonnade Pen Stand is 10 cm tall and deep enough for rulers and paintbrushes, not only biros. Its removable divider keeps pens apart from scissors and markers; lift it out when you would rather have one deep well.
If one cup is not enough, the Crescent Desk Organiser has three sections and an open, angled front, so you can see everything and take it out one-handed. It sits low, so it never blocks a monitor.
3. Stand the phone up (1 minute)
A phone lying flat covers your paper and pulls your eye every time it lights up. Upright, at reading angle, it is easier to glance at and easier to ignore. The Basecamp Mobile Stand has a recess for a standard 56 mm MagSafe-style charger and a slot underneath for the cable, so the phone charges where it stands. The fluted block beside it has six compartments for whatever is left loose.
4. Sort the small things (1 minute)
Clips, erasers, sticky notes and that one USB stick are what make a desk look messy, because there are so many of them. Give them compartments of their own. The Heart Pen Holder has three, and its opening tips towards you, so you reach in from your chair rather than over the top.
5. Keep one thing that is not work (30 seconds)
A cup, a sprig of green, a small object you like. Just one. It makes the desk somewhere you want to sit, and one thing is easy to keep free of dust.
The habit that keeps it tidy (30 seconds, every evening)
Before you get up for the day, put everything back in its home. When every item has one, this takes less than a minute, and that is the whole point of steps two to four.
Every piece here is printed to order in our studio in matte PLA, with felt feet fitted so it will not scratch a wooden desk, and is dispatched in 3–5 working days. See all desk organisers.
